New with sewing? Here are some suggestions for fabrics that are easy to work with:

  • Cotton poplin fabric : poplin is a light and easy fabric to sew that is suitable for many sewing projects. Less stretchy and easy to sew, this is the perfect fabric for beginners in sewing. It does not move therefore it is very easy to handle.

  • Linen fabric : linen is a robust and resistant fabric. It is the ideal material to start with.

  • Swiss cotton fabric: Swiss cotton is a light and soft cotton fabric that is suitable for many beginner sewing projects. Thanks to its mercerized thread, it has a silky feeling. It sews like cotton poplin, the sewing machine feeds the fabric very easily.

  • Jersey fabric: jersey is a soft and elastic fabric, generally knitted or worked from blends of viscose or cotton jersey. It's a stretchy, comfortable fabric that's great for many beginner sewing projects, like T-shirts and leggings. It is advisable to let the fabric slide under the machine without pulling on it.

  • Honeycomb fabric: it takes its name from the shape of the cells present on the fabric that were formed during weaving. Honeycomb is a cotton waffle fabric. The fabric has a mid-weight and resistant fall. The advantage of the honeycomb is that you just have to follow the outline of the waffle to cut it. It is ideal for household uses, clothing and baby accessories.

  • Cotton terry: Cotton terry is a small loop woven fabric. The cotton terry has a semi-heavy and resistant fall. It is sewn in the same way as the honeycomb fabric and therefore perfect for the first sewing projects.
  • cotton canvas fabric: cotton canvas is an extremely resistant plain fabric made of thicker cotton. The canvas has a semi-heavy and resistant fall. We advise you to overcast (make a zig - zag stitch) your edges together while sewing.

It is important to choose a fabric that is suitable for your sewing project and your skill level. If you are a beginner, we advise you to choose materials that are easy to work with to help you gain experience and feel comfortable with your sewing machine.

The jersey fabric can be scary at first but if you use it correctly without pulling during sewing, you will be satisfied with the result. If you have a good stretch-type needle and your sewing machine's tension set correctly when you change from stitch to zigzag stitch, there won't be a problem.

It's perfectly normal to want to experiment with sewing in different ways and want to mix and match materials, but for your first sewing projects try to stick to the same fabric materials instead.

Remember that you learn from your mistakes. So start with small projects before embarking on ambitious projects.
Finally, always choose a fabric that you like, it will motivate you more to sew.
