What is jersey?

Jersey fabrics are versatile and comfortable materials, often used for casual clothing. Made from fibres such as cotton or viscose, they offer exceptional stretch. Thanks to elastane, these fabrics are ideal for creating fitted and comfortable garments. There are also variations such as ribbed jersey or quilted jersey, ideal for comfortable clothing and accessories. Softness, fluidity and easy care make jersey fabric ideal for your creations.

Sold by the metre, this lovely jersey fabric is available in a variety of solid colours such as black, blue, light blue, grey, green, white... Printed fabrics with stripes or floral patterns are also available.

Certified under the GOTS and Oeko-Tex labels, this textile is soft and easy to sew. Comfortable for babies and adults alike, its stretch knit makes the fabric pleasant to wear on any occasion.

Garments and accessories that can be made with jersey fabrics

  • Clothing: skirts, T-shirts, sports jerseys, lightweight trousers, jackets, lightweight sweatshirts, comfortable pyjamas, dresses, leggings, joggers
  • Accessories: bags, headbands and blankets are good examples.

This material is easy to work with when sewing thanks to its natural stretch. It can be sewn easily with a standard sewing machine. For optimal results, simply use a suitable jersey needle and a stretch stitch. For care, jersey should be washed at low temperature, dries quickly in the open air, and retains its softness and shape after each wash.

How can you identify jersey fabrics?

Jersey is a knitted fabric, not a woven fabric, easily recognisable by its softness and natural stretch. Unlike traditional fabrics, it has fine knit loops visible on the right side and a slightly looped or lined appearance on the reverse.

Soft to the touch, jersey fabric drapes easily and barely wrinkles, making it ideal for comfortable clothing such as T-shirts, leggings and children’s clothing. It can be 100% cotton or blended with elastane for better shape retention. By choosing a jersey fabric piece, you are choosing a versatile textile that is pleasant to wear and perfect for everyday creations.

How do you choose the right jersey fabric?

Choosing the right jersey fabric mainly depends on its stretch and its intended use. Jersey comes in several variations, each offering a different level of stretch.

For close-fitting garments such as leggings, bodysuits or fitted T-shirts, choose a stretch jersey containing elastane, often 5 to 8%, for greater comfort and shape retention.

Also consider the fabric’s drape! Viscose jersey is lighter and more supple, making it perfect for tops or dresses. Cotton jersey, on the other hand, is more stable and ideal for sweatshirts, pyjamas or children’s clothing. Check the stretch percentage, horizontally and sometimes vertically, to ensure it suits your project.

By carefully choosing your fabric piece jersey, you ensure a harmonious drape and easier sewing.

Different types of jersey fabrics

Jersey fabric comes in several variations, each suited to specific uses.

The most common is cotton jersey, which is soft, breathable and slightly stretchy. It is ideal for everyday clothing, such as T-shirts or pyjamas. Easy to sew, it is an excellent choice for beginners.

On the other hand, punto jersey (or Ponte di Roma) is thicker, denser and less fluid. Thanks to its structured shape, it is perfectly suited to making skirts, lightweight jackets or stretch trousers.

Finally, viscose jersey is appreciated for its softness, fluid drape and soft silky feel. It is the ideal fabric for lightweight dresses, elegant tops or summer garments.

Each type of jersey offers unique properties. Consider the texture, weight and level of stretch to choose the fabric best suited to your project.

How should you care for jersey fabrics?

To preserve the quality and softness of your jersey fabric, machine wash it at 30 °C with a spin cycle. Avoid tumble drying, as it can affect the stretch and cause shrinkage. Prefer air-drying flat to preserve the garment’s shape. If necessary, iron it on the reverse at a medium temperature.

Proper care extends the lifespan of your creations and keeps the colours vibrant. To discover our jersey fabric pieces that are easy to sew and care for, browse our collection now and find the perfect fabric for your comfort and style projects!

Our jersey pairs perfectly with other fabrics: quilted fabrics for jackets, faux leather for accessories. To succeed with your stretch sewing, equip yourself with a professional overlocker or a Juki machine.
