Bi-stretch fabric is a woven fabric that stretches in both directions, across the width and along the length, thanks to its elastane content. Unlike a jersey knit, it retains the structure and drape of a classic woven fabric: this makes it the go-to material for trousers, suits and structured dresses that need to remain comfortable all day long. At Verotex, bi-stretch fabric is sold by the metre, cut to the exact length you need, in a width of 140-149 cm and Oeko-Tex certified.

Why choose bi-stretch fabric

  • Stretch in both directions: freedom of movement at the waist, knees and armholes, without the garment losing its shape.
  • Structure and stability: it does not pucker, run or stretch out, and it cuts like an ordinary woven fabric.
  • Soft feel, fluid drape: a finish similar to fine wool fabric, with an elegant matte appearance and no transparency.
  • Easy to care for: washable at 30°, crease-resistant, ideal for everyday and office wear.

What to sew with bi-stretch fabric

This is the fabric for comfortable smart garments: trousers including tailored and cigarette trousers, pencil skirts, fitted dresses, jackets and blazers, jumpsuits and suits. It is also suitable for elegant workwear and outfits that require ease without a figure-hugging effect. For a more casual project, take a look at our jersey fabrics or our sweatshirt and jogging fabrics.

Sewing bi-stretch without difficulty

Bi-stretch fabric can be sewn on a standard sewing machine, without an overlocker being required. Use a stretch or ballpoint needle, size 80 to prevent skipped stitches, and a slightly lengthened straight stitch (2.5 to 3 mm) or a very narrow zigzag on seams that are under stress. Seraflex elastic thread allows you to sew with a straight stitch while retaining the seam's elasticity. Iron at medium temperature with a pressing cloth: elastane does not like high heat. Cut all pieces in the same direction, as bi-stretch fabric has a slight sheen direction.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between bi-stretch and stretch fabric?
A classic stretch fabric generally stretches in one direction, most often across the width. Bi-stretch fabric stretches in both directions, providing greater ease in fitted and structured garments.

Is bi-stretch fabric transparent?
No, it is an opaque, matte fabric that does not require lining for trousers or a skirt.

How much fabric should I allow?
Allow approximately 1.50 m for a pair of adult trousers in a 140 cm width, 1.20 m for a pencil skirt and 2 m for a dress. Add 20 cm if your pattern includes pockets or a separate waistband.

How should I care for it?
Wash at 30° on a normal cycle, use a gentle spin cycle and dry on a hanger. Avoid the tumble dryer, which can weaken the elastic fibres.
