A Coverstitch machine creates a cover hem: the double parallel topstitching you see at the bottom of T-shirts. It does not cut the fabric and does not replace an overlocker. It finishes.
The Lewenstein Coverlock 900CS is our Coverstitch machine model. It is intended for dressmakers who already sew jersey and want finishes that do not ripple after washing.
What a Coverstitch machine is used for, and what it is not used for
The Coverstitch machine creates a coverstitch. Two or three needles pierce the right side of the fabric. A looper passes the thread underneath. The result is stretchy: the hem follows the fabric without breaking.
This is the stitch found on all commercially made knit garments. On a regular sewing machine, a jersey hem pulls or breaks at the first stretch. The Coverstitch machine solves this problem.
However, it does not cut the fabric or join two pieces edge to edge. For that, you need a Lewenstein overlocker. The two machines complement each other; they are not competitors.

What the 900CS can do
- Triple coverstitch, 3 needles, 6 mm width
- Wide coverstitch, 2 needles, 6 mm width
- Narrow coverstitch, 2 needles, 3 mm width
- Chain stitch, 1 needle, for joining seams
It reaches 1,000 stitches per minute. The stitch length can be adjusted from 1 to 4 mm. The differential feed ranges from 0.5 to 2.25: it is what prevents puckering on jersey and waving on lycra.
Threading follows a color code and includes a looper threader. LED lighting illuminates the sewing area. A safety system prevents sewing when the cover is open or the presser foot is raised.
It weighs 7 kg and measures 35 x 26.5 x 32 cm. The warranty is 2 years, extendable to 5 years after registration. A cover, needle set, tweezers, screwdriver, brush and oil are included.
These features are those published by the manufacturer on the official Coverlock 900CS product sheet.
Who it is made for
For you if you regularly sew knit fabrics: T-shirts, leggings, sweatshirts, children's clothing. Also for you if your jersey hems have disappointed you for years.
Less for you if you are a beginner and do not yet have an overlock machine. In that case, start with the overlock machine: it is useful more often, and for more projects.

Frequently asked questions
Does a coverstitch machine replace an overlock machine?
No. The overlock machine cuts, overlocks and joins. The coverstitch machine creates the finishing hem. The 900CS does make a chain stitch joining seam, but it does not cut the fabric.
Can you make a coverstitch hem without a coverstitch machine?
Yes, with a twin needle on a sewing machine. The result is similar on the right side. But the wrong side is not overlocked, and the stitch breaks more easily when stretched.
What thread should be used on the Coverlock 900CS?
Standard sewing thread on the needles. Woolly nylon thread on the looper, for a flexible, comfortable hem against the skin.
Is the 900CS suitable for a beginner?
Yes, if you already know how to use your sewing machine. The color-coded threading removes the main difficulty. Plan a few practice runs on scraps before your first garment.
Do you service Lewenstein coverstitch machines?
Yes. Our workshop handles the repair and maintenance of all brands of sewing machines, overlock machines and coverstitch machines.
