What is jersey?

Jersey fabrics are versatile and comfortable materials, often used for casual clothing. Made from fibres such as cotton or viscose, they offer exceptional stretch. Thanks to elastane, these fabrics are ideal for creating fitted and comfortable garments. Variants such as ribbed jersey or quilted jersey are also available, ideal for comfortable clothing and accessories. Softness, drape and easy care make jersey fabric ideal for your creations.

Sold by the metre, this beautiful jersey fabric is available in a variety of solid colours such as black, blue, light blue, grey, green, white... You can also find striped or floral prints.

Certified under the GOTS and Oeko-Tex labels, this textile is soft and easy to sew. Comfortable for babies and adults alike, its stretch knit makes the fabric pleasant to wear on any occasion.

Garments that can be made with Jersey fabrics

  • Clothing: skirts, T-shirts, sports jerseys, lightweight trousers, jackets, lightweight sweatshirts, comfortable pyjamas, dresses, leggings, jogging bottoms
  • Accessories: bags, headbands and blankets are good examples.

This fabric is easy to work with when sewing thanks to its natural elasticity. It can be sewn easily with a standard sewing machine. For optimal results, simply use a jersey needle and a suitable stretch stitch. For care, jersey should be washed at a low temperature, dries quickly in the open air, and retains its softness and shape after every wash.

How much fabric should you allow?

This fabric is available here by the metre and in pieces. You can use it for underwear, T-shirts and pyjamas.

Characteristic Value
Width 140 to 150 cm
Weight 200 g/m²
Care Wash at 30°C, do not tumble dry, iron at a low temperature
Packaging By the metre or in a piece

The amounts below come from our fabric requirements guide, for a width of 140 to 150 cm.

  • Underwear: 50 cm
  • T-shirts: 1 m
  • Pyjamas: 2.50 m to 3.50 m
  • Tank tops: 1 m

For example, for underwear, allow 50 cm and add a little extra if the fabric has a pattern that needs matching.

In practical terms, a width of 140 to 150 cm often allows you to cut two pieces side by side. In practice, there is no need to pre-wash it: our fabrics are already pre-washed and do not shrink as long as they are washed at 30 degrees.

How do you recognise jersey fabrics?

Jersey is a knitted fabric, not woven, easily recognisable by its softness and natural stretch. Unlike classic fabrics, it has fine loops visible on the right side and a slightly looped or ribbed appearance on the wrong side.

Soft to the touch, jersey fabric drapes easily and hardly wrinkles, making it ideal for comfortable clothing such as T-shirts, leggings or children's clothing. It can be 100% cotton or blended with elastane for better shape retention. By choosing a piece of jersey fabric, you are opting for a versatile textile that is pleasant to wear and perfect for everyday creations.

How do you choose the right Jersey fabric?

Choosing the right jersey fabric depends mainly on its stretch and its intended use. Jersey comes in several variations, each offering a different level of elasticity.

For close-fitting garments such as leggings, bodysuits or fitted T-shirts, choose an stretch jersey containing elastane (often 5 to 8%) for greater comfort and shape retention.

Also consider the fabric's fluidity! Viscose jersey is lighter and softer, perfect for tops or dresses. Cotton jersey, on the other hand, is more stable and ideal for sweatshirts, pyjamas or children's clothing. Check the stretch percentage (horizontal and sometimes vertical) to ensure it suits your project.

By carefully choosing your jersey fabric remnant, you ensure a harmonious drape and easier sewing.

Different types of jersey fabrics

Jersey fabric comes in several varieties, each suited to specific uses.

The most common is cotton jersey, which is soft, breathable and slightly stretchy. It is ideal for everyday clothing, such as T-shirts or pyjamas. Easy to sew, it is an excellent choice for beginners.

On the other hand, Ponte jersey (or Ponte di Roma) is thicker, denser and less fluid. Thanks to its structured drape, it is perfect for making skirts, lightweight jackets or stretch trousers.

Finally, viscose jersey is popular for its softness, fluid drape and soft and silky feel. It is the ideal fabric for lightweight dresses, elegant tops or summer garments.

Each type of jersey offers unique properties. Consider the texture, weight and level of elasticity when choosing the fabric best suited to your project.

How do you care for jersey fabrics?

To preserve the quality and softness of your jersey fabric, machine wash it at 30 °C with a spin cycle. Avoid using the tumble dryer, which can affect the elasticity and cause shrinkage. Prefer air-drying flat to preserve the garment's shape. If necessary, iron it on the reverse side at a medium temperature.

Proper care extends the lifespan of your creations and keeps the colors vibrant. To discover our easy-to-sew and easy-care jersey fabric remnants, browse our collection now and find the perfect fabric for your comfortable and stylish projects!
