What is jersey?

Jersey fabrics are versatile and comfortable materials, often used for casual clothing. Made from fibers such as cotton or viscose, they offer exceptional stretch. Thanks to elastane, these fabrics are ideal for creating fitted and pleasant-to-wear pieces. There are also variants like ribbed jersey or quilted, perfect for comfortable clothing and accessories. Softness, flow, and easy care make jersey fabric an ideal choice for your creations.

Sold by the meter, this pretty jersey fabric is available in a variety of solid colors such as black, blue, light blue, grey, green, white... You can also find striped or floral prints.

Certified under the GOTS and Oeko-Tex labels, this textile is soft and easy to sew. Comfortable for babies and adults alike, its stretch knit makes the fabric pleasant to wear on any occasion.

Garments that can be made with Jersey fabrics

  • Clothing: skirts, t-shirts, sports jerseys, light trousers, jackets, light sweatshirts, comfortable pajamas, dresses, leggings, jogging pants
  • Accessories: bags, headbands, or blankets are good examples.

This material is easy to work with in sewing thanks to its natural stretch. It sews easily with a standard sewing machine. For optimal results, just use a jersey needle and a suitable stretch stitch. For care, jersey washes at low temperature, dries quickly in the open air, and retains its softness and shape after each wash.

How to recognize jersey fabrics?

Jersey is a knitted fabric, not woven, easily recognized by its flexibility and natural stretch. Unlike classic fabrics, it shows fine knits visible on the front and a slightly looped or lined appearance on the back.

Soft to the touch, jersey fabric drapes easily and wrinkles very little, making it ideal for comfortable clothing such as t-shirts, leggings, or children’s clothes. It can be 100% cotton or blended with elastane for more hold. By choosing a jersey fabric piece, you opt for a versatile textile, pleasant to wear and perfect for everyday creations.

How to choose your Jersey fabric well?

Choosing the right jersey fabric mainly depends on its stretch and the intended use. Jersey comes in several variants, each offering a different level of elasticity.

For tight-fitting clothes like leggings, bodysuits, or fitted t-shirts, prefer a stretchy jersey with some elastane (often 5 to 8%) for more comfort and hold.

Also consider the flow of the fabric! A viscose jersey is lighter and more supple, perfect for tops or dresses. A cotton jersey, on the other hand, is more stable, ideal for sweatshirts, pajamas, or children’s clothes. Check the elasticity rate (horizontal and sometimes vertical) to match your project.

By carefully choosing your jersey fabric piece, you ensure a harmonious fall and easier sewing.

Different types of jersey fabrics

Jersey fabric comes in several variants, each suited to specific uses.

The most common is cotton jersey, soft, breathable, and slightly stretchy. It is ideal for everyday clothing, like t-shirts or pajamas. Easy to sew, it is an excellent choice for beginners.

On the other hand, punto jersey (or Ponte di Roma) is thicker, denser, and less flowing. Thanks to its structured hold, it is perfect for making skirts, light jackets, or stretch trousers.

Finally, viscose jersey charms with its softness, fluid fall, and soft and silky touch. It is the ideal fabric for light dresses, elegant tops, or summer pieces.

Each type of jersey offers unique properties. Consider the texture, weight, and level of stretch to choose the fabric best suited to your project.

How to care for jersey fabrics?

To preserve the quality and flexibility of your jersey fabric, wash it in the machine at 30 °C with a spin cycle. Avoid the tumble dryer which can damage the elasticity and cause shrinkage. Prefer air drying flat to keep the garment’s shape. Ironing, if needed, should be done inside out at medium temperature.

Good care extends the lifespan of your creations and keeps colors bright. To discover our jersey fabric pieces that are easy to sew and care for, browse our collection now and find the perfect fabric for your comfort and style projects!
