From Gembloux, allow just under half an hour via the N4 and then the N243: the store is in Grez-Doiceau, on Chaussée de Wavre. You make the journey once to choose your sewing machine, and rarely more: guidance is also provided remotely, delivery covers the whole region, and the workshop only requires you to travel in on the day the machine needs to be serviced.

Coming from Gembloux to the store

Take the N4 towards Namur, then the exit towards Walhain and Chastre, or the N243 via Sombreffe, depending on where you are coming from. In either case, it takes just under half an hour. Allow time on site: trying a machine deserves to be done without watching the clock.

Try it online: three questions, one direction

Answer here; the result appears immediately. Nothing is sent or saved. That way, you can come to the store already knowing what you want to try.

What do you sew most often?

A versatile sewing machine is more than enough. Look at the buttonhole function and the needle-down position rather than the number of stitches. As for fabric, dress fabrics and blouse fabrics set the tone.

The sewing machine assembles pieces, but it is the overlocker that gives a garment a shop-bought finish, while the coverstitch machine makes hems that do not split. Consider overlocker thread and jersey.

Straight lengths and wide fabrics: aim for a clear free arm and smooth feeding. Tablecloth fabrics, cushion covers and blankets are the projects that come up most often.

The key criterion is the space under the arm: a few extra centimetres let you turn the project without creasing it. See the quilting machines, and the specialized presser feet for free-motion sewing.

You need a frame that stays steady and a drive system that can handle thick layers: look at the semi-professional models, or even the lockstitch machines. Materials: faux leather, canvas, bag fabrics.

Embroidery machines are judged more by their hoop and software than by their speed. An in-store demonstration saves a lot of trial and error on the first design.

Where are you at?

Solid mechanics and clear threading are worth more than forty decorative stitches. See the machines for beginners, and the in-store sewing classes to develop the right habits straight away.

This is when upgrading the frame and drive system really pays off. Patternmaking also opens the door to garments with the right fit, without relying on standard sizes.

A domestic machine eventually shows its limits with daily use. Semi-industrial lockstitch machines are made for this, with the annual maintenance that comes with them.

What matters most?

First look at the machines on sale and the refurbished machines: at the same budget, they often offer a higher level of mechanics than entry-level new machines.

The frame determines everything. A metal chassis absorbs vibrations and lasts twenty years; that is what sets the ranges apart at Juki, BERNINA, bernette and Lewenstein.

Measure the shelf before choosing. The right compromise is a machine heavy enough not to jump on the table, yet compact enough to store on its own. Ten minutes of testing in the store will settle the question.

What is decided on-site and what can be adjusted remotely

Testing: in-store

Noise under load and feeding through three layers distinguish the models within minutes. This cannot be delegated, and the guide which sewing machine to choose as a beginner helps prepare for your visit.

Getting started: your choice

More than an hour, included with every machine purchase. From Gembloux, the remote option avoids a second trip. The programme includes threading, tension adjustment and useful stitches.

Delivery: everywhere

Free for machine purchases over €500 and for fabrics from €75, cut to the length ordered. See delivery costs.

The workshop: a round trip

A message beforehand tells you whether the problem can be solved with an adjustment or whether the machine needs to be brought in.

What buying a machine looks like, from the door to the first stitch

  1. You tell us what you sewSome jersey, a wool coat, leather goods, quilting: each answer eliminates half the selection.
  2. We bring out two or three machinesNot ten. You sew on them, using your own fabric if you brought some.
  3. You leave with it, or it follows youAdjusted and ready to use. Delivery is free for purchases over €500.
  4. Getting startedMore than an hour, included. From Gembloux, in-store or remotely, as you prefer.
  5. The workshop takes over from there5-year warranty, servicing every two years, repairs for all brands.

Machines by use

Verotex is a Juki Concept Store and an official retailer of BERNINA, bernette and Lewenstein.

The workshop: repair and maintenance for all brands

The workshop services all brands, machines purchased from Verotex as well as those bought elsewhere, with a quote before work begins. Almost everything is repaired on-site; the part is sent to the manufacturer only when there is no other solution. BERNINA machines are repaired regardless of age.

Servicing every two years is sufficient for normal use, and once a year for heavy use: fluff builds up under the feed dog, tensions eventually slip, and the stitch suffers before you notice it. From Gembloux, sending a message beforehand avoids a wasted trip. Between visits, cleaning your overlocker is easy to do at home. For everything else, see the repair and maintenance service.

Fabrics, haberdashery supplies, and patterns

Fabrics are cut by the metre, on request, and shipped everywhere. When the journey takes half an hour, made-to-measure cutting avoids buying leftover fabric along with the required length. The drape of viscose, the weight of French Terry, and the feel of linen are best judged between your fingers. Cotton poplin, denim, double gauze , and organic fabrics make up most of the cuts that are shipped.

Also available are haberdashery supplies, sewing patterns, machine accessories, and a guide to finding the grainline.

Learn to sew from Gembloux

Sewing and pattern-making classes are held in Grez-Doiceau, in small groups. There are also children's classes and classes held off-site. The space can be rented for a sewing team-building event or a birthday party.

Is the trip worth it?

Yes, if

  • you are buying a machine: one visit is enough to decide;
  • your machine is making a new noise or skipping stitches;
  • you want to see and touch the fabrics before ordering.

Not necessarily, if

  • you already know which model you want: free delivery for purchases over €500, with remote guidance;
  • you order fabric: it is cut by the meter and shipped by carrier;
  • it is a simple adjustment: the message often resolves it.
