From Louvain-la-Neuve, the shop is about twenty minutes away: take the N25 towards Wavre, then Chaussée de Wavre to Grez-Doiceau. Living in a pedestrianised town, in a student room or apartment, creates specific constraints - space, noise and storage - and these guide the choice of a sewing machine far more than the list of stitches.

Getting from Louvain-la-Neuve to the shop

Take the N25, then Chaussée de Wavre, without going through Wavre city centre. It’s worth combining the trip: try the machine, have fabric cut on site, pick up haberdashery supplies - everything can be sorted out in the same visit.

What do you sew most often?

A versatile sewing machine is more than enough. Look at the buttonhole function and the needle-down position rather than the number of stitches. As for fabrics, dressmaking fabrics and blouse fabrics set the tone.

The sewing machine assembles the pieces, but it’s the overlocker that gives a garment a store-bought finish, while the coverstitch machine creates hems that don’t pop. Don’t forget overlocker thread and jersey.

Long straight seams and wide fabrics: look for a clear free arm and a firm feed mechanism. Tablecloth fabrics, cushion covers and blankets are the projects that come up most often.

The key criterion is the space under the arm: a few extra centimetres and the project turns without wrinkling. See the quilting machines, and the specialized presser feet for free-motion sewing.

You need a frame that stays put and a feed mechanism that handles thick layers: look at the semi-professional models, or even the lockstitch machines. Materials: faux leather, canvas, bag fabrics.

Embroidery machines are judged more by the hoop and software than by speed. An in-store demonstration saves a lot of trial and error with the first design.

Where are you at?

Solid mechanics and easy-to-follow threading are worth more than forty decorative stitches. See the machines for beginners, and the in-store sewing classes to develop the right habits straight away.

This is when it really pays to move up in terms of the frame and feed mechanism. Pattern drafting also opens the door to garments with the right fit, without relying on standard sizes.

A domestic machine eventually shows its limits with daily use. Semi-industrial lockstitch machines are made for this, along with the annual maintenance they require.

What matters most?

First, look at the machines on sale and the refurbished machines: for the same budget, they often offer a step up in mechanics compared with entry-level new machines. This is often the right answer for a student budget.

The frame decides everything. A metal frame absorbs vibrations and lasts twenty years; that is what separates the ranges at Juki, BERNINA, bernette and Lewenstein.

In a dorm room or studio apartment, measure the shelf before choosing. The right compromise is a machine heavy enough not to jump on the table, compact enough to store on its own, and quiet enough to sew in the evening without disturbing the neighbor.

Sewing in a small space

A dorm room, studio apartment or kitchen table sets its own constraints. The real criteria become the space the machine takes up once stored, its weight when you need to take it out of the cupboard, and the noise level at 10 p.m. in an apartment building. A compact mechanical machine often meets these requirements better than a wider electronic model.

You are a beginner

The classic trap is a machine with forty stitches when you will only ever use straight stitch and zigzag. Our guide which sewing machine to choose for beginners sets out the right criteria.

You are starting again after years

The inherited machine may still sew very well. To get back in the saddle, the basics of sewing and how to use a sewing machine.

You sew a lot

Jersey, faux leather and layers of denim require a firm feed. That's when you start wondering how to choose your overlocker.

Your machine lets you down

Skipped stitches, thread breaking, unusual noise: often an adjustment to redo, sometimes a part.

What buying a machine is like, from the door to the first stitch

  1. You tell us what you sewJersey, a wool coat, leather goods, quilting: each answer eliminates half the department.
  2. We take out two or three machinesNot ten. You sew on them, using your own fabric if you brought some.
  3. You leave with the machineAdjusted and ready. Delivery is free for purchases over €500 if you don't have a car; details are on the delivery costs page.
  4. Getting startedMore than an hour, included: threading, tension settings, useful stitches. Available remotely if the class schedule leaves no time slot.
  5. The workshop takes over from there5-year warranty, servicing every two years, repairs for all brands.

The workshop: repair and maintenance for all brands

A machine inherited from a grandmother, a second-hand machine taken over from another student, or a model bought elsewhere: the workshop takes them all, with a quote before any work begins. Almost everything is repaired on site; a part is sent to the manufacturer only when there is no other solution. BERNINA machines are repaired regardless of their age.

Servicing every two years is suitable for normal use, and once a year for intensive use. Between visits, cleaning your overlocker is easy to do at home. For everything else, see the repair and maintenance service.

Fabrics, haberdashery and patterns

Fabrics are cut by the metre, as requested. Ordering the right amount avoids unnecessary waste, which is an advantage when storing supplies in a student room. The drape of viscose, the weight of French Terry, and the feel of linen can be assessed between your fingers. Cotton poplin, denim, double gauze and organic fabrics make up most of the cuts that go out.

Also available are haberdashery, sewing patterns, machine accessories and the guide to finding the grainline. Free delivery on fabrics from €75.

Sewing classes are held in small groups in Grez-Doiceau. Pattern drafting particularly appeals to those who want to move beyond standard sizes. There are also children's classes and classes held outside the shop. The space can be rented for a sewing team-building event or a birthday party.

Is it worth making the trip?

Yes, if

  • you are hesitating between two or three models;
  • you sew in an apartment and noise matters;
  • your machine has skipped stitches or a new noise;
  • you want fabric cut to the exact length.

Not necessarily, if

  • you already know which model you want: ordering online is sufficient, and the introduction can be done remotely;
  • you do not have a car: delivery is free for purchases over €500;
  • you cannot come during opening hours: write to us on WhatsApp.
