Getting from Overijse to the store

The N253 via Huldenberg and Ottenburg, then Nethen and Chaussée de Wavre. About twenty minutes from the town center, slightly less from Terlanen or Tombeek. Allow time on site: trying a machine deserves to be done without watching the clock.

What do you sew most often?

A versatile sewing machine is more than enough. Look at the buttonhole function and the needle-down position rather than the number of stitches. As for fabrics, dress fabrics and blouse fabrics set the tone.

The sewing machine assembles, but it is the overlocker that gives a garment a store-bought finish, and the coverstitch machine that makes hems that do not split. Consider overlocker thread and jersey.

Straight lengths and wide fabrics: aim for an unobstructed free arm and smooth feeding. Tablecloth fabrics, cushion covers and blankets are the projects that come up most often.

The key criterion is the space under the arm: a few extra centimetres let the project turn without creasing. See the quilting machines, and the specialized presser feet for free-motion sewing.

You need a frame that stays stable and a feed system that handles thick layers: look at semi-professional models, or even lockstitch machines. Materials: faux leather, canvas, bag fabrics.

Embroidery machines are judged more by the hoop and software than by speed. An in-store demonstration saves a lot of trial and error with the first design.

Where are you at?

Solid mechanics and clear threading are worth more than forty decorative stitches. See the machines for beginners, and the in-store sewing classes to develop the right habits straight away.

This is when upgrading the frame and feed system really pays off. Patternmaking also opens the door to garments that fit properly, without relying on standard sizes.

A domestic machine eventually shows its limitations with daily use. Semi-industrial lockstitch machines are made for this, along with the annual maintenance that comes with them.

What matters most?

First look at the machines on sale and reconditioned machines: for the same budget, they often offer a higher mechanical level than new entry-level models.

The frame determines everything. A metal chassis absorbs vibrations and lasts twenty years; that's what distinguishes the ranges from Juki, BERNINA, bernette and Lewenstein.

Measure the shelf before choosing. The right compromise is a machine heavy enough not to jump on the table, yet compact enough to store on its own. Ten minutes of testing in the store will settle the question.

What is decided on-site and what can be handled remotely

The test: in-store

Noise under load and feeding through three layers distinguish the models within minutes. This cannot be delegated, and the guide which sewing machine to choose for beginners prepares you for the visit.

Getting started: your choice

More than an hour, included with every machine purchase. From Overijse, twenty minutes is enough to come back, but the remote option is also available. The programme includes threading, tension settings and useful stitches.

Delivery: everywhere

Free for purchases over €500 on machines and from €75 on fabrics, cut to the ordered length. See the delivery costs.

The workshop: a round trip

A message beforehand indicates whether the problem can be solved by readjusting the machine or whether it needs to be brought in.

How a purchase works, from the door to the first stitch

  1. You tell us what you sewJersey, a wool coat, leather goods, quilting: each answer eliminates half the range.
  2. We bring out two or three machinesNot ten. You sew on them, using your own fabric if you have brought some.
  3. You leave with it, or it follows youAdjusted and ready. Delivery is free for purchases over €500.
  4. Getting startedMore than an hour, included. In-store or remotely, as you prefer.
  5. The workshop takes over afterwards5-year warranty, servicing every two years, repairs for all brands.

Machines by use

Verotex is a Juki Concept Store and an official BERNINA, bernette and Lewenstein dealer.

The workshop: repair and servicing for all brands

The workshop accepts all brands, including machines purchased from Verotex and those bought elsewhere, with a quote provided before any work. Almost everything is repaired on site; the part is sent to the manufacturer only when there is no other solution. BERNINA machines are repaired regardless of their age.

Servicing every two years is sufficient for regular use, and once a year for intensive use: lint compacts beneath the feed dogs, the tensions eventually slip, and the stitch deteriorates before you notice it. From Overijse, the trip is short, and sending a message beforehand avoids a wasted journey. Between visits, cleaning your overlocker is easy to do at home. For everything else, see the repair and servicing service.

Fabrics, haberdashery supplies and patterns

Fabrics are cut by the metre, to order, and shipped everywhere. The drape of viscose, the weight of French Terry, and the hand of linen are best judged between your fingers: just a twenty-minute drive away, it is worth the trip before ordering. Cotton poplin, denim, double gauze , and organic fabrics make up most of the cuts that are shipped.

Also available are haberdashery supplies, sewing patterns, machine accessories, and the guide to finding the grainline.

Learn to sew from Overijse

Sewing and pattern-making classes are held in Grez-Doiceau, in small groups, in French. There are also children's classes and classes held off-site. The space can be rented for a sewing team-building event or a birthday party.

Is the trip worth it?

Yes, if

  • you are buying a machine: a single visit is enough to make your choice;
  • your machine is making a new noise or skipping stitches;
  • you want to see and touch the fabrics before ordering.

Not necessarily, if

  • you already know which model you want: free delivery for purchases over €500, with remote assistance;
  • you order fabric: it is cut by the metre and shipped by carrier;
  • it is a simple adjustment: the message often fixes it.
