Try it online: three questions, one direction

Answer here; the result appears immediately. Nothing is sent or recorded. Then you know what to ask when you come through the door.

What do you sew most often?

A versatile sewing machine is more than enough. Look at the buttonhole and the needle-down position rather than the number of stitches. As for fabrics, dress fabrics and blouse fabrics set the tone.

The sewing machine assembles, but it is the overlocker that gives a garment a ready-to-wear finish, while the coverstitch machine makes hems that do not split. Consider overlocker threads and jersey.

Straight lengths and wide fabrics: look for unobstructed free-arm space and reliable feeding. Tablecloth fabrics, cushion covers and blankets are the projects that come up most often.

The key is the space under the arm: a few extra centimetres let the project turn without creasing. See the quilting machines, and the specialised presser feet for free-motion sewing.

You need a frame that stays stable and a drive system that can handle thick materials: look at the semi-professional models, or even the straight-stitch machines. Materials: faux leather, canvas, bag fabrics.

Embroidery machines are judged more by the hoop and software than by speed. An in-store demonstration saves a lot of trial and error on the first design.

Where are you at?

Solid mechanics and clear threading are worth more than forty decorative stitches. See the machines for beginners, and the in-store sewing classes to develop the right habits straight away.

This is when upgrading the frame and drive system really pays off. Pattern drafting also opens the door to well-fitting garments, without relying on standard sizes.

A domestic machine eventually shows its limits with daily use. Semi-industrial straight-stitch machines are made for this, along with the annual maintenance they require.

What matters most?

First look at the machines on sale and the refurbished machines: for the same budget, they often offer a step up in mechanics compared with entry-level new machines.

The frame determines everything. A metal chassis absorbs vibrations and lasts twenty years; that is what sets the ranges apart at Juki, BERNINA, bernette and Lewenstein.

Measure the shelf before choosing. The right compromise is a machine heavy enough not to jump on the table, yet compact enough to store on its own. Ten minutes of testing in the store will settle the question.

Try before you buy

A sewing machine is judged by ear and under your fingers: the sound of the motor under load, the consistency of the feed over three layers, the actual space under the arm, the weight of the handwheel. None of this appears on a product sheet.

You are a beginner

The classic trap is a forty-stitch machine when you will only ever use the straight stitch and zigzag. Our guide, which sewing machine to choose for beginners, sets out the right criteria.

You are getting back to it after years

The machine from the attic may still sew very well. To get back into it, start with the basics of sewing and how to use a sewing machine.

You sew a lot

Jersey, faux leather and layers of denim require firm feeding and a frame that does not move. This is when you ask yourself how to choose your overlocker.

Your machine lets you down

Skipped stitches, thread breaking, unusual noise: often an adjustment needs to be redone, sometimes a part needs replacing. It usually goes back the same day as the diagnosis.

What buying a machine is like, from the door to the first stitch

  1. You tell us what you sewJersey, a wool coat, leather goods, quilting: each answer eliminates half the range.
  2. We bring out two or three machinesNot ten. You sew on them, using your own fabric if you brought some.
  3. You leave with the machineAdjusted and ready. Delivery is free for purchases over €500; the details are on the delivery costs page.
  4. Getting startedMore than an hour, included: threading, tension, useful stitches, routine maintenance.
  5. The workshop takes over afterwards5-year warranty, maintenance every two years, repairs for all brands. You are just a short distance away.

Machines, by use

Verotex is a Juki Concept Store and an official retailer of BERNINA, bernette and Lewenstein. Advice starts with the project: clothing, jersey, light leather goods and quilting do not call for the same mechanics.

The workshop, in the store

Machines of all brands are serviced here, whether bought from Verotex or elsewhere, with a quote provided before any work. Almost everything is repaired on site; the part is sent to the manufacturer only when there is no other solution. BERNINA machines are repaired regardless of their age.

A machine used regularly only needs servicing every two years, or once a year if it is used heavily. Lint builds up under the feed dog and the tensions eventually slip: the stitching is affected before it becomes visible. Between services, cleaning your overlocker is easy to do at home. For everything else, see the repair and maintenance service.

Fabrics, haberdashery and patterns

Fabrics are cut to order by the metre: the exact amount, without paying for leftover fabric that serves no purpose. The drape of viscose, the weight of French Terry, and the feel of linen are best judged between your fingers. Cotton poplin, denim, double gauze and organic fabrics make up most of the cuts that are shipped.

Also available are haberdashery, sewing patterns, machine accessories and the guide to finding the grainline. Free delivery on fabrics from €75.

Classes, right here

Sewing classes take place in the store, in small groups, also including pattern drafting and children's classes, plus classes held outside the store. The premises can also be rented for a sewing team-building event, a birthday party or a bachelorette party.

What being nearby changes

The advantage of being nearby

  • you can come back and try a second time before deciding;
  • a spool or a needle can be picked up while passing by, without waiting for a parcel;
  • dropping off at the workshop only requires a small detour;
  • classes can be attended without arranging the journey.

And if you cannot visit

  • your online order is delivered free of charge for purchases over €500 on machines and from €75 on fabrics;
  • getting started is also provided remotely;
  • outside opening hours, write to us on WhatsApp.
